Steps for selecting a coach:
  • Ask people you respect within your company/profession about their experiences with their coach.
  • Read your professional and industry publications (both in print and on the Internet) with an eye toward the authors' notes for the articles that strike a responsive note.
  • Invest the time to have an introductory consultation or interview with a prospective coach--in most cases there will be no charge for this call. Be sure to ask about their coaching business and the kind of clients they successfully serve.
  • Visit the coach's website; he or she should be expected to have one.
  • Expect to find a "perfect fit" with your coach--you deserve it!
Eight most common questions a coach might ask you:
Many of our clients think their situation or specific problems are unique to them and only to them. During our coaching calls they are often relieved to hear that others are facing their exact same problems. Here are eight of the most common questions John asks his clients:
  1. How will you know when you have reached your goals?
  2. How will you balance your successful professional career with a great personal life?
  3. You are hearing an important message. Are you ready to learn an important lesson or feel the pain of your choices?
  4. What do you fear the most? How will your life improve if this fear did not exist?
  5. Are you ready to become a daily learner?
  6. Are you ready to say no, and feel good about it?
  7. What did you learn from this situation/problem?
  8. Can we summarize your options and agree on some next steps?
Returning to our professional sports analogy, it might be interesting for you to identify your company's version of winning the Super Bowl, the World Series, the NBA championship, or the Stanley Cup. How would you know when you have won it? Pretty clear-cut for the Broncos or the Yankees or the Stars! Their goals were clear, and their measurements of success unambiguous. Could they have done it without the support, strategies, encouragement, insights, accountability and, yes, the "Push" they received from their coaches? How can you find your company's version of Mike Shanahan; Joe Torre; Gregg Popovich; Ken Hitchcock? Ready to hire a coach and take yourself to the top?
